Christman Construction has stepped up to the challenge of transforming a historic power plant landmark into a world class office headquarters for the Accident Fund Insurance Company of Lansing. Douglas Steel will work closely with the design team to reconfigure the interior structural framing to support the new office floor plates. This will require precise demolition and reconstruction of nearly 1,000 tons of structural steel. Logistical means and methods will be studied with multi-disciplinary interphasing to maintain the architectural and structural integrity of building. When completed, this historic facility will support 186,000 square feet of prestigious office space....

Mid Michigan medical is expanding its prestigious health care facility by adding operating rooms and a five story patient tower. Titled the Harlow Expansion, the total project will include 221,500 square feet of premium healthcare space framed with 1,608 tons of structural steel. A corresponding energy center was added adjacent to the hospital site. Skanksa USA contracted with Douglas Steel to utilize BIM and early material procurement to secure their critical schedule. ...

Michigan’s newest casino is being built along the busy I94 Detroit to Chicago corridor. The Firekeepers Casino in Battle Creek is developed by the Nottawaseppi Band of Huron Potawatomi Tribe. Clark Construction has contracted Douglas Steel to fabricate and erect 1,300 ton of structural steel and miscellaneous iron. The casino porte-cochere entrance way is rolled both ways and the front point of the porte-cochere resembles a bird’s beak. The 252,800 square foot Casino and a precast parking ramp makes up the initial phase of construction. A hotel is planned in a future phase. ...

Not to be outdone by their chief instate rival, Michigan State, or by their hated rival at Ohio State’s recent stadium renovations, the University of Michigan has unveiled their long awaited expansion and renovations to “The Big House”. Douglas Steel was the successful bidder to perform fabrication and erection of over 2,400 tons of structural steel to add covered concourses, luxury suites, press boxes and video decks to the west side of Michigan Stadium. When the renovations are complete, the capacity of the Big House will top 108,000.
Erection of the steel is slated to start on March 17, 2008 and be completed in just over two months by utilizing two large cranes simultaneously on the tight jobsite. Overtime for our field crews was also authorized by the Construction Manager, Barton Malow, in order to assure compliance with the extremely tight schedule.

Eight years earlier, Douglas Steel built the structural frame for the original 4-story west bed tower expansion. The new challenge is to add three additional levels of steel framing vertical above the existing tower. This 132,000 square foot addition requires 1,500 tons of rigid framed composite steel framing. Working above a fully occupied and operational patient bed tower poses serious complications. A major challenge was to positioning a large crane with sufficient capacity to reach high and deep across the existing structure. Douglas Steel in working under a Cost Management Contract in close partnership with Barton Malow/Skanska and Harley Ellis Devereaux to economize the design, control costs and maintain an aggressive schedule. ...
