Douglas Steel's fabrication process is built around a highly skilled team of people who are supervised by a group of foremen that average over twenty-five years of experience each in the custom structural steel fabrication process.
Our operation has been certified by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) under the Standard for Steel Building Structures. Our certification demonstrates the commitment by our team to deliver a quality project. The AISC Certification process involves an examination to evaluate a company’s quality management system rather than the specific product. Certification is based on a third party audit conducted by people experienced in fabrication and/or erection. Certification looks at processes and procedures, since it’s easier to build in quality into a project and impossible to inspect for it after the fact. Their auditors pride themselves on being tough, and companies must correct deficiencies to pass their audit. Certification is one of the only ways a company can let a designer/contractor know that they are qualified and certified to provide good quality work.
Our facility features modern equipment such as multiple punching, automatic welding drilling, reaming, sawing and milling. A state of the art automatic shot blast machine has the ability to provide a "white blast" finish that is both quick and economical.
A customized software package provides complete traceability to each piece of material on the project. From the time of material requisition, to mill purchase orders, to plant cutting lists and even on shipping lists for the loading of trucks for delivery, traceability is maintained.
Fabrication is performed in two plant facilities. Major structural fabrications are built in our 50,000 square foot plant located on Lansing's west side. Miscellaneous Iron and light fabrications are built in our 11,000 square foot plant on the north side of Lansing. Our combined plants are capable of producing over 12,000 tons of structural steel and miscellaneous iron annually.
