Douglas Steel has a detailing staff which performs under the capable supervision of our Vice President of Engineering, Technology and Safety. Our detailing staff has over a century of combined experience in pre-construction consultation, value engineering, detail drafting and coordination between design, detailing and production. Our Vice President of Engineering, Technology and Safety is a registered Professional Engineer with over 30 years of experience in the structural field.

Douglas Steel’s in-house detailing staff has demonstrated the ability to achieve consistently high quality, excellent communication, in-house control, immediate response to changes and revisions, and full coordination with both our fabrication and erection personnel. Productivity in the fabrication and erection operations is foremost in the minds of our staff as each product is modeled and detailed.

Our clients and customers receive the benefit of a high level of customer service, on-time deliveries, projects completely integrated and coordinated from material procurement through erection and a job well done.

Our detailers are equipped with the most advanced computer aided design detailing system available. The SDS/2 detailing module developed by Design Data is a totally integrated software package tailored for steel engineering and fabrication. A CIS/2 or CIMSTEEL file can also be output from SDS/2 for input into other design and modeling software. We also have the ability to import CIS/2 or CIMSTEEL files from various engineering design software packages into SDS/2. We have successfully used this Building Information Modeling (BIM) process to interface our work with other trades to eliminate interferences and to create virtual 3D models of structures. In fact, Douglas Steel has pioneered the use of BIM since 1995. We have used this process on many industrial buildings, health care facilities and office buildings successfully.

We have also output 3D models from our software for architects and engineers to use for approval of drawings. This process does not involve the transfer of any drawings between any of the approving parties. 3D models are exchanged and each party reviews and comment directly on the 3D model. The approved model is then returned with comments. The approver is able to see in a 3D model the entire configuration of the area being reviewed. The approver will see exactly how the building will look in its as built condition in an electronic format. This can cut the approval time down to half the normal approval time thereby saving valuable schedule time.

All of our detailers receive extensive in-house training including yearly updates in connection design. This training ensures that our staff is fully aware of the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings and the AISC Code of Standard Practice.
